Replacing the exterior rain cladding with photo voltaic cells creates a true Building Integrated Photo Voltaic facade known as BIPV.
Photo voltaic cells are temperature sensitive and their power output is reduced at higher temperatures, so our systems are designed to allow natural air ventilation to cool the panels while providing a durable sun and weather screen to the underlying building structure.
The SolarLab BIPV solution can be customized to fit any facade and is therefore used both in new buildings and as rainscreens in energy renovations. The facade panels are made from coated and tempered low-iron glass laminated with high quality HJT or PERC c-Si photo voltaic cells, before being assembled into the finished facade system.
Our integrated production takes place entirely in Europe and provides an extremely flexible and responsive production pipeline with a very low LCA, as we strive to manufacture using purely sustainable energy sources and minimizing unnecessary transport.
Depending on location and orientation as well as the local source of electricity, a BIPV facade will return the energy and carbon dioxide investment accrued during its creation in as little as two to three years. It will also, within just a few years, have paid for the marginal cost of the system, while, of course, continuing to produce sustainable and free electricity for many years to come. This makes BIPV facades one of the best investments available with a very high ROI - and the only building material to do so.
Panels manufactured using the same technology and materials are known to still be in production 60 years after they where originally installed.
Our BIPV facades are supplied as complete systems, to be installed by a local installer under our supervision. If required, SolarLab can, however, also supply the installation and commissioning crew as part of a complete turn-key contract. The facade cladding system includes all mechanical components to mount on the target facade as well as all electrical components to install and connect the system electrically.
The SolarLab cladding systems are designed for low energy footprint, longevity and ease of installation as well as service. A low installation weight of only 13 kg/sqm has been achieved to ensure the systems can be installed anywhere and by a single person if necessary.
SolarLab has a deep and extensive background in solar panel manufacturing, from running our own production in Northern Sweden where we manufacture standard panels to our new production pipeline across Europe. We use this unique understanding of the technical possibilities and limitations to design, develop and manufacture our energy producing facades.
To ensure BIPV options are fully explored and designed as an integrated part of a building's architecture we support owners and architects with a pre-tender design service also called a 'FEED Project Package'. This support aims to minimize any perceived process risk by ensuring the facade is designed for production, installation and code-compliance, and to ensure that the architectural design intent translates into the final building through the production of visual and functional prototypes as well as the contribution of relevant information to the tender specifications.
SolarLab naturally also provides energy studies and scoping of installations as well as a designed roof mounted system when the design and visual expression of the system is of importance to the architecture or use of the roof. We see this happening more and more as roofs become sculptural, are utilized for activities, or integrated as part of rainwater management solutions.
SolarLab offers to supply a complete turn-key installation with our expert installers, electricians and commissioning team. We also have excellent experience working with local installers that receive 'what-comes-in-a-box' from SolarLab, along with quality assurance and commissioning support. This adds flexibility and allows us to be ready to find the best solution for each project.
